Fabric Development and Sourcing

A brief for a cloth that does not exist yet, or one a design room has not been able to find, carried back to Italian and European mills and worked through trials and sampling until it does what the collection needs.

The brief starts with a problem, not a swatch book

Most sourcing requests arrive as a description of a gap: a hand that reads heavier than it weighs, a drape that holds a specific silhouette, a finish that has not shown up in a domestic mill's range. The work is matching that description against a portfolio built from classic constructions through to more technical and innovative materials, then narrowing to the handful of options actually worth sampling. A design room rarely wants the first swatch that fits the description on paper. It wants the one that fits once it is on the table.

Trials, sampling rounds, and the yardage behind them

A first trial is almost never the final one. Weight gets trimmed, drape gets softened or firmed, a finish gets pushed or pulled back, and each pass goes back to the mill as a revised sample rather than a note in an email. Once a construction is approved, the same relationship that ran the trials carries the order through to production yardage, so the fabric that reaches the cutting table is the one the design room actually signed off on, not a close approximation of it.

Renovazio has run fabric development for brands including Ralph Lauren, Elie Tahari, Calvin Klein, Theory, Bebe and Brooks Brothers. Call (212) 764-2890.

Three variables, worked at once

HAND

How a cloth feels moving through a hand before it ever reaches a machine. Fibre content, yarn twist and finishing all sit inside this one word, and it is usually the first thing a design room can identify even when it cannot name the cause.

WEIGHT

Grams per metre decides how a garment sits and moves, and a mill can often shift weight without losing the hand a design room approved, which is exactly the kind of trade a sampling round exists to surface.

DRAPE

Whether a cloth falls straight or moves with the body is set by construction as much as fibre. It is the variable most often chased across several sampling rounds, and the one a photograph never quite settles.

Where sourcing connects to the rest of the work

A cloth that clears sampling still has to be represented, priced and placed with the mill that made it, and it still has to answer to where the market is heading.
